In an
Arthritis Care & Research
analysis of 6661 participants in the Australian Longitudinal Study on
Women's Health, maintaining at least low levels of physical activity
throughout middle age was associated with lower prevalence and incidence
of joint symptoms later in life.
The potential protective effect of physical activity on joint
symptoms was stronger in obese women than in under or normal weight
women, and it was not related to menopausal status or use of hormone
therapy.
