Latest Health Research - COVID-19

Asthma may not be a significant risk factor for severe COVID-19

Jonathan Kantrowitz at Health News Report - 3 hours ago
A new research letter published online in the *Annals of the American Thoracic Society* examines whether asthma is a significant risk factor for developing COVID-19 that is severe enough to warrant hospitalization and intubation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, individuals with asthma are at higher risk for hospitalization and other severe effects from COVID-19, similar to the elevated risk from such health conditions as obesity, hypertension and diabetes. In "Asthma in COVID-19 Hospitalizations: An Overestimated Risk Factor?," Fernando Holguin, MD, MPH... more »

Hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin increases heart risk

Jonathan Kantrowitz at Health News Report - 1 week ago
The combination of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and azithromycin (AZM) has been linked to significant cardiovascular risks, including mortality, in the largest safety study ever performed on both HCQ and HCQ+AZM. This network study, led by the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics community, was recently published in *Lancet Rheumatology*. OHDSI has established an international network of researchers and observational health databases with a central coordinating center housed at the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University. In patients with rheumatoid arthr... more »

Children play a larger role in the community spread of COVID-19 than previously thought

Jonathan Kantrowitz at Health News Report - 1 week ago
In the most comprehensive study of COVID-19 pediatric patients to date, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Mass General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) researchers provide critical data showing that children play a larger role in the community spread of COVID-19 than previously thought. In a study of 192 children ages 0-22, 49 children tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, and an additional 18 children had late-onset, COVID-19-related illness. The infected children were shown to have a significantly higher level of virus in their airways than hospitalized adults in ICUs for COVID-19 ... more »

Low humidity increases COVID-19 risk: Another reason to wear a mask

Jonathan Kantrowitz at Health News Report - 1 week ago
A study focused on the Greater Sydney area during the early epidemic stage of COVID-19 found an association between lower humidity and an increase in community transmission. Now a second study by the same team confirms the risk. The study is published today in *Transboundary and Emerging Diseases*. The research led by Professor Michael Ward, an epidemiologist in the Sydney School of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney, and two researchers from our partner institution Fudan University School of Public Health in Shanghai, China, is the second peer-reviewed study of a relation...more »

Obesity a significant risk factor for death from COVID-19 infection, especially in men

Jonathan Kantrowitz at Health News Report - 2 weeks ago
Researchers found a striking association between BMI and risk for death among patients with a diagnosis of COVID-19. The association was independent of obesity-related comorbities and other potential confounders. Their findings also suggest that high BMI was more strongly associated with COVID-19 mortality in younger adults and male patients, but not in female patients and older adults. A retrospective cohort study is published in *Annals of Internal Medicine*. Read the full text: https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M20-3742. Vaping linked to COVID-19 risk in teens and young adults

Jonathan Kantrowitz at Health News Report - 3 weeks ago
Vaping is linked to a substantially increased risk of COVID-19 among teenagers and young adults, according to a new study led by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The study, which will be published online Aug. 11 in the *Journal of Adolescent Health*, is the first to examine connections between youth vaping and COVID-19 using U.S. population-based data collected during the pandemic. Among young people who were tested for the virus that causes COVID-19, the research found that those who vaped were five to seven times more likely to be infected than those who ... more »

MMR Vaccine Could Protect Against the Worst Symptoms of COVID-19

Jonathan Kantrowitz at Health News Report - 4 weeks ago
Administering the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine could serve as a preventive measure to dampen septic inflammation associated with COVID-19 infection, say a team of experts in this week’s *mBio*, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology. Long-time collaborators and spouses Dr. Paul Fidel, Jr., Department Chair, Oral and Craniofacial Biology, and Associate Dean for Research, Louisiana State University Health School of Dentistry and Dr. Mairi Noverr Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans co-authored the perspecti... more »

Patients positive for COVID-19 - Retesting of patients for presence of SARS-CoV-2

Jonathan Kantrowitz at Health News Report - 3 weeks ago
In the first large, multicenter analysis of its kind, the 40-hospital UPMC health system today reported its findings on clinician-directed retesting of patients for presence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in the journal *Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology*. While retesting was uncommon, the UPMC analysis found that patients positive for COVID-19 stayed positive for an average of three weeks and repeating tests in patients who were initially negative very rarely led to a positive result. "In the U.S., COVID-19 testing capacity is limited -- not everyone who wan... more »
